Training of Trainers, Mexico – Island Conservation
In collaboration with the Grupo de Ecología y Conservación de Islas (GECI), we designed and facilitated a customized workshop focused on community outreach. The workshop integrated behavior change techniques, impact evaluation, effective communication, strategic use of social media, and training of trainers to develop participatory workshop designs.
The intervention aimed to strengthen GECI’s team capacity to work more effectively with local fishers—key actors in island conservation in the Gulf. We developed a community outreach strategy to promote biosecurity measures on boats traveling to the islands, aiming to reduce the risk of introducing invasive species such as rodents.
The process began with a participatory site and threat analysis and concluded with a comprehensive strategy including a Theory of Change, SMART objectives, and context-adapted actions. The training of trainers, supported by community facilitation techniques using Technology of Participation (ToP), enabled the team to learn effective and culturally relevant methodologies to encourage active participation from fishing communities.
